Assignment I Design i

Description

Here is the first of ten ensembles I designed for my fashion illustration class.

Our assignment is to learn how to properly draw technical flats, and effectively allude to certain sewing techniques through illustration. We were to design ten original ensembles (one, two, or three pieces each) for the Autumn/Winter season that could be mix and matched with each other. The designs must have been created keeping in mind they would, theoretically be made out of 80% denim. (Being that this is just the illustration class, we will not be drafting patterns for or constructing these designs.) We then must choose four out of our ten ensembles to present to our class.

Well, if you know anything about me, you know that I don't really wear pants, let alone jeans. So my familiarity with denim is a bit.... vague. I know it is a cotton fiber content with a twill weave of normally blue and white yarns. Other than that...yep, don't know much about it.

So I was a bit stumped when we first got this assignment. I had absolutely no idea how to design something that would be staying true to my aesthetics and meet the parameters of my assignment. However, thankfully, during our instructors demo of that day, my inspiration hit me.

Sexy neo-western zombie assassin wear! Yep, I had a binge with Keelee just a few weeks before where we watched the first three Resident Evil movies (among others) in one night! It was wonderful. The costumes just got progressively more innovative as the movies went on. And the third really struck me. I loved it. So a sexy zombie assassin would need her clothes to be made out of a durable fabric, right? What better fabric then denim?! It's pretty wonderful when it comes to durability. I could go on in detail about it's properties in tenacity and abrasion resistance, but I'll spare you.

And I, being me, could not seem to disassociate the "sexy neo-western" part of my inspiration from the movie Wild Wild West, and how delightfully steampunk it is. Soooo, some of my designs also happen to be rather, prissy victorian-y. But I think it is a coherent collection. There is more to follow. So lemme know what you think!
